The project is a collaboration between hygiene- and healthcare company Essity, Volvo Cars, Stena Fastigheter and BatteryLoop, a Stena Recycling group company. Together they created a circular system for renewable energy, intended to charge electric cars and bikes. A system founded on the use of post-consumer electric car batteries from Volvo Cars, feeding a total 78 car stations and 24 bike stations with climate neutral electricity. A clear example of how a circular collaboration can be built, concerning electric cars. To make sure that the batteries service life is prolonged, as well as to lessen the impact on the environment.
World leading solution
Reusing car batteries for energy storage is something the company BatteryLoop has developed several solutions for. A couple of examples are energy storages for properties and systems for charging electric ferries. The idea is that there is still a lot of capacity left in a modern electric vehicle battery, when it can no longer be used for its original function, So much capacity that the batteries definitely can be reused in other functions, Rasmus Bergström, CEO of BatteryLoop says:
− This is a very exciting collaboration where we together create a sustainable loop around battery powered cars. We give the batteries a second life in our smart energy storage system BLESS (BatteryLoop Energy Storage System), where an extended commercial life of the batteries is secured.
That Stena Recycling also can take care of and efficiently recycle the materials in the batteries in their end-of-life is another climate benefit. As some of the materials in batteries are rare-earth and very valuable.
Energy storage value
It's climate smart to reuse and later on recycle electric vehicle batteries. Firstly, fewer new valuable and rare materials are required, secondly those already in use are well taken care of. This saves on production costs and energy-intensive manufacturing processes. Finally, there are new uses that save energy and the climate indirectly. Being able to store energy locally over time is a growing need for modern society.
And the project partner Stena Fastigheter tells us about more business gains.
- The infrastructure with solar panels and reused batteries, enables us to handle several different challenges. We get a better power output control and energy storage in buildings that have local energy production. It may also stabilize the power grid outtakes. And, we are now able to offer our tenants a more sustainable way to commute, thus driving us forward, says Agneta Kores, CEO with Stena Fastigheter in Gothenburg.
