Demonstrating industrial‑scale material separation

Senior leaders from Stena Recycling, Vestas, and the wider Stena Group recently met in Sweden to take part in a joint site visit focused on wind turbine blade recycling and circular innovation.

The visit took place at Stena Recycling Nordic Recycling Center (SNRC) in Halmstad, where participants were given an in‑depth look at Stena Recycling’s laboratory facilities and industrial testbed. The programme focused on how laboratory‑proven recycling methods are now being applied at industrial scale as part of the ongoing Blade Circularity Solution.

From collaboration to industrial reality

During the visit, participants explored how complex composite materials from wind turbine blades are processed and separated into distinct material streams under controlled testbed conditions. The testbed plays a critical role in validating material quality, safety, repeatability and volume — key prerequisites for moving recycling solutions from research into real‑world industrial application.

The visit highlighted how close collaboration between Stena Recycling and Vestas is enabling progress beyond laboratory validation, supporting Vestas’ ambition to move toward zero‑waste wind turbines and a more circular wind energy value chain.

Transparency and shared understanding

Bringing together leadership from both organisations enabled open dialogue around the technical, operational and strategic aspects of blade recycling. The visit created a shared understanding of where the project stands today and what is required to continue scaling the solution.

Demonstrations at the testbed showed how industrial recycling expertise, material knowledge and innovation come together to address one of the wind industry’s most complex circularity challenges, the recycling of epoxy‑based composite materials.

A strong foundation for next steps

The visit was met with strong engagement and positive feedback from all participants, reinforcing confidence in the direction of the project and the value of continued collaboration.

With industrial‑scale material separation now demonstrated, the next phase of the Blade Circularity Solution focuses on further validation with downstream partners and developing new applications for recovered materials, bringing the wind industry another step closer to full circularity.
