Stena Metall in new EU project focused on recycling of rare earth metals
Today, the rare earth metals in your computer, smartphone and other products are not recycled. Stena Metall participates in the new EU project REE4EU where we are looking for new sustainable recycling solutions.

Today, rare earth metals such as neodymium and dysprosium in your computer, smartphone and other products aren't recycled. But they’ll be needed to build the electronics you’ll want tomorrow. There are no sustainable recycling solutions within EU. Stena Metall participates in the new EU project REE4EU, financed by the EU Commission via Horizon 2020, where we are looking for new sustainable recycling solutions.

“We are looking at methods for improving the supply of these metals,” says Christer Forsgren, who heads environmental and technological operations at the Stena Metall Group. “Old smartphones and other small electronic devices are typically put away in dresser drawers, or even worse, thrown out with the trash and incinerated, and when that happens the metals are gone for good."
China dominate the virgin resources and production. The EU has issued a warning that the short supply of rare metals can affect the industry and even hinder the development of new, green technologies. REE4EU is focused on implementation, pilot plants and commercial solutions. Companies, academia and recycling companies are all involved in the project consortium.
